This August, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra embarks on a four-city, six-concert tour across Europe following their annual residency at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Divan co-founder Daniel Barenboim leads the orchestra and pianist Martha Argerich is the featured guest soloist.
The tour launches on 10 & 11 August at Austria’s Salzburger Festspiele. On 10 August, Barenboim and the Divan offer an all-Mozart program highlighting the composer’s Symphonies Nos. 39, 40 & 41. The 11 August concert sees Martha Argerich at the keyboard for Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra plus performances of Jörg Widmann’s Con brio and orchestral selections from the operas of Wagner.
The Divan appears at the Waldbühne Berlin, now an annual tradition, on 13 August for Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Argerich alongside Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture, Dawn and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey, Siegfried’s Funeral March and the Die Meistersinger Overture.
Appearing at the Lucerne Festival, the Divan presents its all-Mozart program on 14 August and the music of Widmann, Wagner and – with Argerich – Liszt on 15 August. With soloist Martha Argerich, Barenboim and the orchestra perform Liszt’s First Piano Concerto, and the Divan also plays the music of Widmann and Wagner on 17 August at the BBC Proms.
The Divan’s summer 2016 tour of Europe comes to a close on 18 August at the Teatro de la Maestranza.
