Continuing what has now become an annual tradition, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra returns this summer to Buenos Aires’s Teatro Colón to kick off its 2016 workshops and tour with co-founder Daniel Barenboim.
The residency begins on July 24 with an all-Mozart program, which is reprised on July 26. Chamber music performances on July 25 and 27 highlight the music of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Jörg Widmann, and a small ensemble explores Arabian music on August 1.
The orchestra celebrates the music of Alberto Ginastera and Horacio Salgán in honor of their hundredth birth anniversaries on July 29 and 30.
On July 31, Daniel Barenboim and Martha Argerich reunite for a duo piano recital that is a part of the Divan’s residency. Argerich joins the orchestra on August 4 and 5 for Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in a program that also includes Widmann’s Con brio and overtures from the operas of Wagner.
The Divan’s Teatro Colón residency wraps with tenor Jonas Kaufmann joining the Divan for arias from Wagner’s Die Walküre, Parsifal and Lohengrin.
From Buenos Aires, the Divan go to the Salzburger Festspiele, Waldbühne Berlin, Lucerne Festival and BBC Proms on a European tour.
