Summer would not be the same without the WEDO’s annual summer tour. Since last Monday, the musicians and Daniel Barenboim have started to come together to rehearse this year’s ambitious program featuring all of Beethoven’s symphonies and works by Pierre Boulez, with pieces by Bohuslav Martinu, Leoš Janácek, and Antonín Dvorák rounding out the repertoire.
A smaller formation will play works by Pierre Boulez in a chamber concert on Saturday, July 7 at the Staatsoper Berlin. The opening performance of the symphonic tour will be in Munich on July 10. After a quick trip to Castel Gandolfo for a private concert in honor of Pope Benedict XVI (see separate news item), the Orchestra will take in Versailles, Geneva, Sevilla, the BBC Proms in London and the Salzburg Festival, among other venues. The concert scheduled for Berlin’s Waldbühne on 29th July 2012 will be one of the highlights of the “Beethoven for All” summer tour and will again be in aid of educational projects organised by the Orchestra in Israel and Palestine. Decca Classics has just released its “Beethoven for All” 5-CD box set, a recording of all nine symphonies performed by Daniel Barenboim and the Orchestra.
